Tenured professor at the Faculty of Engineering and Sciences at the Adolfo Ibañez University. He has a PhD in Artificial Intelligence (AI) from the University of Edinburgh, UK. His main areas of research include natural language processing, word mining, machine learning, and intelligent systems. Dr. Atkinson was a member of the advisory council of the Commission of Challenges of the Future of the Senate of Chile, during 2019 for the elaboration of the national policy in AI.
He is an Industrial Civil Engineer from the University of Chile, and a PhD in Economics from Boston University. He currently works as a tenured professor at the Faculty of Engineering and Sciences of the Adolfo Ibáñez University. He was president of the National Council of Innovation for Competitiveness and General Director of Fundación Chile. In addition, he was Minister of Public Works between 2006 and 2008, and Executive Vice President of Corfo in 2014 and 2018.

He belongs to the research group of the 'Center de Llenguatge i Computació'. His research interests are the role that artificial intelligence plays in helping users with their daily tasks. Currently Professor at the Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC), I work at the University of Extremadura and at the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery in Cáceres as a research technician. In recent years, his research has been related to topics such as machine learning, deep learning, 2D / 3D monitoring of multiple objects and human movement, recognition of human activities, artificial vision applied to transport and detection of objects, among others.
He currently works as a tenured professor at the University of Chile where he created the Voice Transmission and Processing Laboratory where he researches artificial intelligence, human-robot integration, among others. He was a visiting professor at Carnegie Mellon University, USA, between 2016 and 2017. His interests include multidisciplinary research in artificial intelligence and signal processing in various fields of application such as human-robot interaction, volcanology, etc.
